Birthdays.

We used to make just plain cakes, with sprinkles and such on them for our children's birthdays and special occasions. And they were, well, boring. Not that there is anything wrong with them. Just me and my adventurous side were whining for stimulation. Then one day, I decided to get brave and be creative. I knew my children would love to have something fun and exciting, and extra special. I mean, I make cakes all the time, so what could I do that would make them feel like this was different...that this was their celebration?

Well, my Ashley must have read my mind because she up and requested a kitty cake for her 4th birthday. And I stumbled across this website. Now those were some awesome cakes. Could I do something like that? By golly, I sure wanted to try. And so I did.

Now mind you, it wasn't the most extraordinary cake ever made, but the look of glee on her face was priceless.

I went on to endeavor even more cakes for more birthdays and holidays.

Micah's 3rd birthday.

Ezra's "birth" day cake.

Elias' 6th birthday.

Jonas' 2nd birthday. (If you give a mouse a cookie!)

Ashley's 5th birthday.

As you see, these cakes aren't perfect, but I am getting better. And do you know what? They are frugal too. And fun!! All it costs are a homemade cake, some homemade icing, and a little extra time. Shaped cakes are not much harder then any other layered cake or the like. Just a little cutting, and a little extra piping and you will create a masterpiece your child will adore and remember forever.

So, it has become a tradition in our house. The child gets to pick his favorite thing, and I make a cake out of it the night before their day. It is always a surprise to them at how it will look, but they always know it is will be the object of their current affection. Try making a designer cake for your next occasion. It can even be as simple as this...

A baseball cake for hubby's b-day!

We also don't always have a party for our children, but they do know it's their special time. They get to plan the day's menu with the favorite foods of their choice, and then, if we aren't having a party, usually our parents come over for dinner and cake to celebrate with us.

So, you don't need to spend alot of money to make a birthday extra special. Try making a fun cut designer cake next time!

Very cool! Last year for my girl's first birthday I ordered a cake. It was good, it was pretty, but DANG was it expensive!!! I've decided that from now on I'm going to make their cakes. Their birthday is in a couple weeks and I'm planning to make a simple rainbow cake. Just get a white cake mix, divide the batter into 5 dishes and die it different colors, layer the colors in the cake pan, and TA DA! Rainbow cake! Then I'll cover it with cream cheese icing so no one will know what's inside until we cut it. It should be fun!
